The iTaukei Affairs Ministry launched a information management system on Wednesday during an event to mark International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.

Speaking to this newspaper on Wednesday, iTaukei Affairs Minister Ifereimi Vasu said the database would be a useful resource for storing indigenous information on the 14 provinces in Fiji.

“The information will be safeguarded for generations that will come after us,” he said.

“This has taken quite a few years to set up and we are thankful that is has been made possible.

“For us iTaukei if we know our history we will be able to make decisions that involves our cultural and traditional way of life so that it becomes clear to us.

“Especially when some iTaukei people are living overseas and some are in villages and the urban areas.

“Having this database would be able to connect us.

“So that we know our traditional role because we were brought up in a different setting and it’s important that our children know their culture and traditional practices.

“And in future there is information available there for them.”
