MORE than 305 labour complaints related to COVID-19 are presently being investigated by the Ministry of Employment.

These complaints range from non-payment of statutory leave entitlements and other entitlements under the Employment Relations Act (ERA) 2007.

“The Ministry is also actively investigating 305 labour complaints lodged related to COVID-19,” the ministry highlighted in a statement released yesterday.

The ministry said despite being faced with the historic challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic, adherence to the requirements of the ERA 2007 remained vital.

The ministry said it was proactively working to lessen the pain felt by employers and their employees as many faced tremendous economic uncertainty because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The ministry said it was ensuring that job losses were minimised and that all guarantees made to workers, including paid leave, were fulfilled.

“The ministry is also encouraging measures such as revised working schedules, working from home where possible, and conditional re-employment guarantees.

“The labour officers within the ministry are well positioned to assist employers and employees in navigating the complexities imposed by the COVID-19 crisis and both parties are encouraged to contact the ministry with concerns relating to employment.”

Employment Minister Parveen Kumar has called on both stakeholders to ensure the need for collaboration between employers, their employees and the Ministry.

“COVID-19 presents the biggest economic challenge in living history for Fijians,” Mr Kumar said.

“We’ve consulted with business people and employees throughout Fiji and we’re acutely aware that these are difficult times for all parties involved, particularly in travel-related industries.

“Meanwhile, we must work together to find solutions that are as fair as possible while also positioning our economy to be able to rev back up as quickly as possible once the threat of coronavirus has subsided.”
