The Health Ministry has developed the National HIV Surge Strategy for 2024 – 2027 in light of the increasing numbers of HIV cases.

Ministry medical officer West Dr Abdul Shah told the World AIDS Day commemoration in Nadi on Friday that the strategy has been a collaborative effort involving diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society organisations, faith-based groups and the community at large.

“Through extensive consultations organised by the Family Health Unit, we have incorporated invaluable insights and recommendations from community support groups and various organisations,” he said.

“The strategy has been harmonised with the National Narcotic Strategy 2023 – 2028, ensuring a cohesive approach to address the multifaceted challenges posed by HIV within the broader context of public health and human rights.

“Affirmed by Cabinet on September 12, 2024, the National HIV Surge Strategy will be rolled out across Fiji in the coming months.”

Mr Shah said international technical organisations including WHO and UNAIDS have been instrumental in this process, contributing their expertise to enhance our approach.

”The strategy has five key priority areas focusing on increasing public awareness and understanding of HIV infections, reducing transmissions, expediting public health responses and ensuring that treatment, care, human rights and social justice for those living with HIV are central to our response.”
