In a statement, the ministry confirmed that Year 12 Xavier College student Diksha Shreya Chand died of dengue fever on March 30.

The ministry also highlighted its efforts to prevent any further spread of the illness within the school’s premises.

“In the ministry’s continued efforts to ‘fight the bite’ against dengue, a medical team conducted its investigation and awareness at Xavier College and also the home of the deceased student.

“The ministry has conducted Adult Mosquito Spraying (AMS) as well in these premises and also conducted clean-up and AMS in its hotspot areas in Ba with 70 percent coverage and disease investigation with 60 percent coverage.

“The ministry is working in collaboration with the municipal councils in their fight against dengue.”

When contacted yesterday, Xavier College principal Jalendra Prasad referred us to the ministry. Mr Prasad, however, said the school was taking all the necessary precautions to ensure students’ safety.

“This is an unfortunate incident, but we need to understand that there are lots of other places that people can contract the illness,” Mr Prasad said.

“For the school, we have had the ministry come over to carry out spraying and awareness and also we make sure we maintain cleanliness at all times,” he said.

There have been two dengue deaths recorded so far in Western Division with a total of 2841 cases reported as of March 23.
