The Policing Ministry is stepping up its preparedness for cyber threats, response and recovery.

The ministry’s cybersecurity manager, Savenaca Siwatibau, told the Pacific Fiber Conference and Training in Nadi this week, the ministry hopes to bring out the security risk and the threat issues associated with critical infrastructure at national level.

“If you see that at the top of the framework is the National Security Council, which is the executive authority of any security decision in Fiji,” he said.

“We would like to have access to that council through this framework to highlight the importance and the critical nature of securing our critical infrastructure.”

Mr Siwatibau said more focus seems to be placed on developing critical infrastructure for business continuity, development, infrastructure development and investment while neglecting the fact that they are also vulnerable to international threats and cyber attacks.

“For us to be able to provide a better infrastructure for Fiji or for the region in this sense, we need to be able to also have a secure robust guideline in protecting these critical investments.

“These are the core pillars of this framework. They cover the four pillars that are presented there, which is in governance, preparedness, response and recovery.”

Mr Siwatibau said the ministry had to prioritise the sector or process it would like to focus on in different financial years.

“So, this year we are focusing on preparedness and response.”
