A handful of criminals are profiting while entire communities suffer from addiction, says Minister for Rural and Maritime Development Sakiasi Ditoka.
Mr Ditoka said drug abuse was destroying families and lives, and the Government would not sit back while the crisis deepened.
Speaking at the recent International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, he declared an end to silence on the issue.
“We will not allow a handful of criminals to profit from our people’s suffering. We will no longer stay silent. This ends now.”
He described the crisis as a matter of life and death.
“Drug use is damaging people physically, mentally, and socially. Not only this, but they were linked to needle sharing. Drugs destroy lives. We must not look away.”
Mr Ditoka said the 2025–2026 National Budget included increased support for police and health services and that a new, holistic approach was being taken – covering enforcement, education, and health care.
“To our students, be responsible. Make wise choices. Your future starts with what you decide today.”
He also made a direct plea to parents and guardians.
“Ask yourself, what can I do to protect my children? Be present. Be involved. You are their number one influence. Help them navigate the risk. Be their strength.”
The Government, he said, was working with communities, religious groups and civil organisations to protect the next generation from the harms of drug use.
