An urgent question raised by Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu in Parliament this morning prompted a firm response from Minister for Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh, over the ongoing issues at the Lautoka sugar mill,  currently the only operational mill during the 2025 crushing season.

Mr Seruiratu asked what immediate plans were in place to support industry stakeholders and ensure crushing continues without disruption.

“Given the fact that the Lautoka mill is the only mill currently operational, what plans are in place to address the needs and concerns of stakeholders for the remainder of the 2025 crushing season?” he asked.

Minister Singh, while thanking the Opposition Leader for the question, warned against political point-scoring.

“Thank you very much, Mr Speaker Sir, and thank you for asking this question — I hope you’re not grandstanding,” he said.

Mr Singh reassured Parliament that the government had already engaged with farmers and stakeholders during a recent visit to Viti Levu, and gave a commitment that the crushing season would continue, even if it means extending the season.

“We gave assurances to the farmers, lorry drivers and all stakeholders that we will look after them and ensure the mill continues operating,” he said.

The Minister confirmed that recent issues at the Ba mill had required expert intervention, with engineers from Australia brought in to assess and repair the damage.

“We had significant mechanical failures, and have since flown in experts from Australia to assist,” he told Parliament.

Mr Singh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to seeing the season through.

“If the season has to extend, it will. We are fully committed to supporting our farmers and completing the 2025 crushing season successfully,” he said.
