CONSTRUCTION of a new $1.16 million evacuation centre in Nagado Village to shield local families from the intensifying threats of climate change will commence soon.

The Minister for Public Works Ro Filipe Tuisawau officiated at the facility’s groundbreaking ceremony earlier this week.

Ro Filipe said the Government of Fiji through his ministry was investing exactly $1,168,662 into the facility through its Infrastructure Natural Resource Owners Grant Program.

The 287-square-metre storm haven will take 24 weeks to build. Once complete, it will provide a reinforced sanctuary for children, women, the elderly, and people living with disabilities during national emergencies.

Ro Filipe said the project highlighted a proactive strategy to safeguard frontline communities from escalating natural hazards.

“Fiji remains vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and natural disasters cyclones, flooding, landslides, and rising sea levels,” he said.

“This government recognises that our people deserve safe and reliable spaces during times of emergencies. That is why investments like this are essential.”

During non-emergency periods, the facility will serve as a permanent hub for village meetings, localised training, and community development activities.

Mr Tuisawau stressed that the infrastructure push forms part of a broader, people-centered national agenda ensuring rural areas receive the same structural protections as urban centres.

“Access to safe infrastructure is a right, not a privilege.”
