Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Sashi Kiran has issued a national call to action as Fiji marks the International Day for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect and World Children’s Day.
Speaking on the country’s growing child protection challenges, Kiran revealed that 10,111 cases of child abuse and neglect were recorded between 2019 and 2024, according to the National CWA Database.
“Child abuse and neglect remain urgent challenges affecting not only the individual children but the future of entire communities,” she said.
“Reporting continues to increase over the years, and 60–70% of the cases are of child neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse.”
Kiran said this year’s commemoration carries special significance as the Coalition Government begins implementing two landmark laws — the Child Safety and Protection Act and the Child Justice Act.
“These Acts establish clearer safeguards and a modern, child-friendly justice system.”
“They ensure that children are protected from all forms of abuse and that those in conflict with the law are treated with dignity, fairness and with rehabilitation at the centre.”
She said together, the two laws form “the foundation of a stronger, more coordinated national child protection framework.”
The Minister stressed the importance of collective responsibility in creating a safer Fiji for all children.
“Every child deserves the security of a loving family, systems that protect them, and the opportunity to grow up in an environment that is free from violence and exploitation. They deserve to be loved, cared for, trusted, protected and respected.”
Across the country, the Department of Children is rolling out frangipani treehouses and child-friendly spaces in communities and workplaces to create safe, nurturing environments that support learning and emotional development.
“Setting up these spaces is a practical and powerful investment in children’s wellbeing,” she said.
“They nurture young minds and protect futures.”
“To every parent, teacher and key stakeholder — thank you for standing with us. Each act of care, each moment of guidance and each stand against violence helps build a safer Fiji.”
