Assistant Education Minister Iliesa Vanawalu says the education sector is lagging behind as a result of the lack of updates to the country’s education law, which has remained unchanged since 1986.
“Our education system is still operating under a law that was passed 39 years ago,” Mr Vanawalu said.
He said the education system was outdated and no longer met the demands of today’s learners, teachers or the broader society.
“The Government is now working on a major reform of the education law to bring it in line with current needs,” Mr Vanawalu said, adding amendments would be tabled in Parliament soon.
“These reforms are necessary to modernise the system.
“We want a law that reflects today’s realities, including technology, access to learning, and inclusive education.”
The minister said the proposed changes were expected to introduce new frameworks that supported digital learning, improved access across the country, and better prepared students for the future.
“Our goal is to ensure the education system is relevant, inclusive and ready to meet the challenges of the modern world.”
