The Minister for Justice and Acting Attorney-General, Siromi Turaga, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of Nadi-based medical doctor and social media personality Dr Isireli Biumaitotoya, known online as “Leighley Leli Darling.”

In a statement  Mr Turaga extended condolences to Dr Biumaitotoya’s family, colleagues, patients, and the wider community, describing the loss as “profound with deep sense of loss for the medical fraternity and the wider community.”

The Minister also condemned the wave of transphobic and homophobic abuse that has emerged on social media in recent days.

“This behaviour revictimises a grieving family, harms LGBTQI+ Fijians, and has no place in a country that upholds the dignity of every person,” he said.

“Our Constitution protects equality and prohibits discrimination.”

He stressed the legal and moral imperative to uphold the rights of all Fijians.

“We should not and must not discriminate against those that we see or perceive to see as different from us on the grounds of sex, gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity and expression.”

“These protections in the Constitution are not optional; they are the law.”

Calling for responsible public conduct, Mr Turaga urged citizens to refrain from spreading rumours or harmful content.

“Do not share speculation, private material, or harmful content. If you have information that could assist investigators, take it to the authorities, not to the comments section.”

He reaffirmed his confidence in the Fiji Police Force and the ongoing investigation, including the post-mortem examination.

“Justice requires evidence and due process, and I am assured that this matter is being treated with the seriousness it deserves, no more, no less.”
