The Government’s housing project for 37 displaced families in Nabavatu, Vanua Levu, is not connected to any upcoming election, Rural and Maritime Development Minister Mosese Bulitavu has stressed.
“This perception only arises because people think it is close to an election,” he said, adding that the timeline for completing the homes was not pre-planned.
“Work must continue, whether it is roads, housing, or back-to-school assistance. This project happens to fall within this financial year, and we aim to complete it. It is not vote-buying.”
Many families still live in tents, facing leaks and extreme heat, particularly during heavy rainfall.
Mr Bulitavu said additional support was being provided, including donor funding to improve flooring and tents.
“Living in tents during heavy rain is hard.
“Safety is our priority. Families are moved to higher ground or stronger buildings.’
He thanked the Assemblies of God Church for housing a family during the recent bad weather.
“Roofs are already going up on several houses, with wiring and finishing works expected by June or July.
“Water systems and other essential services will be completed before families move in.”
