Minister: 6051 dual citizenships issued

SINCE April 2009, Fiji has issued 6051 dual citizenship.

Immigration Minister Timoci Natuva told Parliament on Wednesday that most applicants were former Fiji citizens.

“Dual citizenship was implemented in 2009 under the Citizenship of Fiji Decree,” Mr Natuva said.

He said dual citizenship holders were able to reside in Fiji for as long as they wanted without having to apply for a permit since they held a Fiji passport, the same as residents.

“They do not need to go through Investment Fiji should they need to set up a business in Fiji.”

He said a dual citizenship holder would enjoy the same benefits as any normal Fiji citizen.

“One of the benefits in the granting of dual citizenship is that, it has allowed the return of numerous Fijian professionals who had migrated for greener pastures.”

Mr Natuva said his office was anticipating the figures to rise in the coming years.
