Reviewing the minimum wage rate is not currently on the government’s agenda, says Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Professor Biman Prasad.
He confirmed this while speaking during the Fiji Trades Union Congress National Council Meeting in Suva on Saturday.
“We are very pleased about the minimum wage,” Prof Prasad said.
“I know there will be further discussions on that.
“But we have decided that the review of the minimum wage, I must say very honestly, it is not on the agenda at the moment.
“But as I said, these are ongoing issues that we will have to assess, review in a tripartite manner.”
He said the Coalition Government had raised the minimum wage rate as soon as it came into power.
“In the second budget, we realised that we had to address the income side as well.
“So, on the first of January, as soon as we came into government, minimum wage went to $4.
“We put in other packages like back-to-school support for families worth about $50million.
“On 1st of August 2024, it went to $4.50, and $5 from first of April this year.”
