FEDERICO Miller, a student at Marist Brothers High School, has set ambitious targets for 2026, aiming to break the Coke Games senior boys triple jump record and qualify for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
While most students are enjoying the final days of their school holidays, 17-year-old Miller is diligently training under the guidance of former national triple jump champion Eugene Vollmer from the Marist Athletics Club, honing his skills for what promises to be a challenging and exciting athletic year.
Despite his young age, the Savusavu native represented Fiji at the Pacific Mini Games in Palau last year, where he won gold.
“It’s been an invaluable experience, especially at a young age, competing against the best athletes from other countries,” he said. “I’m very grateful for the opportunities I have been given.”
Coach Vollmer is optimistic that Miller will compete in more international events in 2026 following his successful performance at the 2025 Pacific Mini Games.
“Last year, Federico Miller won gold at the Pacific Mini Games. He will be aiming for a spot at the Commonwealth Games, as well as the Oceania Championships and Youth Olympics,” he said.
Qualifying for the Commonwealth Games will be no easy task for Miller, as he needs to achieve a 15-metre jump to secure his place.
“My personal best is 14 metres; I will need to jump 15 metres to qualify for the Commonwealth Games. It won’t be easy, and I’ll have to work really hard, but with my coach’s support, I believe I have a chance,” he explained.
As part of his preparation, Miller hopes to break the senior boys triple jump record at the Coke Games, using it as a stepping stone towards the 15-metre Commonwealth qualifying jump.
“My primary goal for the Coke Games is to beat the senior boys triple jump record. I believe it stands at 14.62 metres, which is close to my personal best,” he said.
