The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) will not be deterred by negative social media commentary on its reconciliation efforts, including its recent engagement with the Great Council of Chiefs.
Commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai said reconciliation remained necessary, despite criticism, given Fiji’s difficult past.
“We understand where the negative views are coming from,” Maj-Gen Kalouniwai said.
This country has gone through a lot.
“But it is important that we continue with reconciliation.”
President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has also praised the military for reaching out to the GCC, describing the move as an act of humility and strength.
Maj-Gen Kalouniwai said the RFMF had already held discussions with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and would continue working with it to give greater structure to its approach.
“We have had discussions with them,” he said.
It’s something we will continue working on
“While there is negativity, we believe this process can help the country as a whole.
He said freedom of expression must be respected and called for patience.
“We will reach the end of the tunnel.”
