More than 40,000 Fijians left the country between 2022 and 2023 in search of better opportunities abroad, Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu told Parliament.
“This was equivalent to a net migration of 5 per cent,” he said.
He said before 2018, about 9000 people migrated annually, but 2019 saw over 25,000 leave either temporarily or permanently.
“The exodus of workers has strained Fiji’s workforce. With a shrinking working–age population, Fiji faces challenges in sustaining economic growth.”
He cited a recent report on teacher shortages in Vanua Levu as an example.
“Other areas such as health, tourism, and the primary industries are also affected.”
He urged strategic investment in education to address labour market gaps.
