The Fiji STEPS Survey 2025 shows that body weight in Fiji peaks during middle age, with both men and women aged between 30 and 59 years recording higher average weights than younger and older age groups.

Men were heavier on average than women, with an overall mean weight of 83.9kg.

The heaviest group was men aged 30 to 44 years, who recorded an average weight of 87.3kg, followed closely by those aged 45 to 59 years at 86.0kg.

Younger men aged 18 to 29 and older men aged 60 to 69 recorded lower average weights.

Women recorded an average weight of 80.8kg. Similar to men, women aged between 30 and 59 years were heavier than both younger and older women, highlighting a clear mid-life weight trend.

Health officials say the findings underline the importance of targeted lifestyle and nutrition interventions for adults in their working years to help reduce long-term risks associated with excess body weight.
