Two games, two wins, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) High School’s under-16 girls’ futsal team has made a dream start in the Extra Supermarket Fiji Southern Secondary Schools Futsal Championship 2025.
Playing in their first-ever futsal tournament, MGM edged Vunimono High School 2-1 in their opener before securing a convincing 2-0 win against International Secondary School at the Fiji Football Academy Vatuwaqa Futsal Court on Saturday.
“This is the first time we have brought a girls’ team to the futsal competition. We are still developing, but I think we are doing well,” said MGM’s head coach, Chrishant Gounder.
The team, made up mostly of year nine and 10 students, has quickly adapted despite limited preparation time.
Training consistency has been a challenge, with the young players eager to play but still learning the discipline of structured sessions.
“The biggest challenge is getting the girls to train regularly. They love playing, but the challenge for the girls is learning to focus on their training,” Gounder said.
Now, MGM shifts its focus to their next match against Suva Muslim College U16 hoping to continue their unbeaten run.
“Our aim is to just focus on our play, our style and win,” Gounder said.
The team is determined to push forward and see how far they can go in the competition.
