The Fiji Online Safety Commission is set to deepen its partnership with global tech giant Meta, following a high-level meeting this week aimed at enhancing digital safety for Fijians.

The Online Safety Commissioner, Filipe Batiwale, met with Cheryl Seeto, Meta’s Head of Policy Programs for Australia, New Zealand & the Pacific Islands, alongside members of Meta’s Policy team.

The meeting focused on advancing collaboration to combat online harms and improve digital literacy in Fiji.

Meta reaffirmed its commitment to support Fiji’s efforts by providing targeted training for the Commission’s team.

This training will focus on two key areas of outreach and online abuse, helping the Commission understand Meta’s content moderation systems and takedown procedures and community awareness, through the co-development of educational content and digital safety campaigns for schools and communities across the country.

M Batiwale stressed the need for greater regional presence from major tech companies, saying that local context is vital in dealing with online threats effectively.

“Partnerships with global technology companies are essential to ensuring Fijians are protected in the digital space, and that our communities, especially young people, are equipped with the knowledge and tools to stay safe online,” he said.

He also called on Meta to establish a stronger presence in Fiji, noting that a deeper local understanding would enable more responsive support for users in the region.
