THE Fiji Airways Fiji men’s national 7s team secured a 26-21 win over the United States in their first pool match of the Hong Kong 7s at the Kai Tak Stadium yesterday.

In the first half, Fiji faced stiff opposition from the Americans however they through the latter’s defence to place in tries scored by Filipe Sauturaga, captain Jeremaia Matana and Joji Nasova.

The Americans held their fort defiantly at the halftime breather with a 14-all deadlock against Fiji.

Heading into the second spell, Fiji added another try to the board with a converted try by Joji Nasova, making it 19-14.

With Fiji back in the lead and in the midst of tough contest against the USA, newcomer Sikeli Basiyalo made his mark with a try of his own.

Basiyalo’s converted try took Fiji out from any potential move by the Americans to swing the game back in their favour.

The Americans persevered and a converted try by Jack Wendling concluded their pool opener at 21 points.

Fiji 7s head coach Osea Kolinisau acknowledged USA for being a formidable team and also shared the message told to the team at halftime.

“It’s a good USA team as well but I’m thankful to the boys that came in and defended like their lives depended on it, on the line and I’m thankful for that,” he shared.

When this edition went to press last night, Fiji had yet to play Ireland in their second pool match.

Meanwhile, the Fiji Airways Fijiana women’s 7s team won 26-17 over Ireland in their first pool match yesterday.
