Pita Gus Sowakula, the former New Zealand All Blacks number 8 and Clermont flanker, made a memorable debut for the FIJI Water Flying Fijians in their 38-18 loss against England at Twickenham yesterday.

Called up at the last minute due to an injury to Kitione Salawa, Sowakula stepped in at blindside flanker, marking his return to international rugby.

Sowakula was outstanding throughout the game, demonstrating a remarkable offloading game that kept the ball alive during key contacts.

His offload to Kuruvoli was instrumental in setting up Fiji’s second try.

He carried with intent all night and delivered a strong defensive effort. Despite Fiji’s 38-18 loss to England, Sowakula stood out as one of the Flying Fijians’ best players on the field.

Prior to the game, head coach Mick Byrne spoke about Sowakula’s selection, explaining that the former All Black could have made his debut earlier but was not released by his club.

“He was available for July and for us he became legally, if you like legally or by the world rugby standards, he became available in July and he got married,” Byrne said.

“Then his French club didn’t release him for PNC so he’s really looking forward to an opportunity to come here and be part of the national team.”

Bryne also encouraged players who missed out on selections to keep working hard, reminding them there is always a chance to be called into the squad.

“There is always disappointment, and people might think they’re not getting looked at or they’re not a chance. There’s always a chance. Sometimes the selection goes around with the coaching group. You talk about how we want to play and what player fits that best,” he explained.

Looking ahead, Byrne’s confirmed more players will be considered to build squad depth for the upcoming 2027 Rugby World Cup.

“As you get towards the end of 2025, we are absolutely doing everything we can to win every Test match. There’s also an eye on 2027.

“You’ve got to keep a balance between making sure that the players you’re bringing in can get better and can be at their best in 2027,” said Byrne.

The Flying Fijians will regroup after their loss and begin preparations for their next test match against France on November 15 at Nouveau Stade De Bordeaux in France.
