Members of the Great Council of Chiefs will hold office for six months, states the iTaukei Affairs (Great Council of Chiefs) Regulations 2023 that was gazetted on May 19.
Chairperson of the iTaukei Affairs Board and Minister for iTaukei Affairs, Ifereimi Vasu made the order under Section 6 of the iTaukei Affairs Act 1944.
The iTaukei Affairs (Great Council of Chiefs) Regulations states the council will consist of the President, the Prime Minister and the Minister for iTaukei affairs as ex-officio members.
Six members will be appointed by the Minister for iTaukei Affairs while 42 chiefs representing the 14 provinces will be selected by each province and three members will be appointed by the Council of Rotuma.
The gazette order outlines the duties of the council as to deliberate, review, formulate and determine issues, policies and laws that relate to the rights, interests, health, welfare, order and governance of both the iTaukei and Rotuman people, respectively.
The Minister for iTaukei Affairs, the iTaukei Affairs Board or the council of Rotuma may refer to the council for any proposal or reports for
consideration.
“Before making any recommendation on any matter, the council may appoint a committee consisting of a chairperson and of such members of the council or of co-opted members as it may deem suitable, to consider such matter and report to the council.”
