FIJI’S lone 400-metre hurdler, Meli Romuakalou (junior), has been steadily rebuilding his career after a challenging injury and is determined to come back even stronger as he sets his sights on qualifying for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The former Suva Grammar School student improved after he returned from injury and made it to the Pacific Mini Games in Palau in June.

Formerly known for competing in the 200m and 400m sprint events, Romuakalou has shifted his focus to hurdles, showing versatility and adaptability in his athletic pursuits.

His participation in the Pacific Mini Games in Palau, demonstrated his improvement and progress.

“It was a very short preparation, but now that I’m much fitter, healthier and stronger than before, my preparation right now is more well-prepared than the competitions this year,” said Romuakalou.

Romuakalou said he is often reminded of his injury whenever he sprinted, however, he understood it would be a work in progress as he adjusts to full training again.

He was part of the Athletics Fiji meet last week, where Fiji athletic great Usaia Sotutu was honoured.

“I finally managed to meet some of the great athletes who inspired me,” he said.

Romuakalou is currently coached by level five athletics lecturer Albert Miller, with support from local coaches who regularly assist with his programs.

“I’m always thankful to the other coaches who help me out with my sessions.”
