Ra high School athlete Melesi Dawai’s silver medal run in the junior girls’ 400 metres final yesterday is the ultimate underdog’s tale of redemption and determination.
The Nasoqo villager from Naitasiri, who has maternal ties to Nalawa, Ra, made her Games debut last year but returned home disappointed, without a medal to her name.
Rather than letting that bitter experience defeat her, Dawai channelled it into motivation during training.
Yesterday, she made a powerful statement, pushing her Suva Grammar School opponent all the way to the finish line.
“Before I ran I prayed to God to give me help me get a medal,” she explained.
“In the last 100 metres my legs were getting really heavy but I persevered just so I can get a medal.”
As she crossed the finish line, the first people who came to her mind were her parents and coaches.
The full weight of her achievement finally dawned on her in that moment.
“I was overjoyed when I won the silver medal. Leaving home to come to Suva, I assured my parents, my family members and my coaches that I will return with a medal,” she said proudly.
Looking ahead to next year, as she enters her second year in the intermediate grade, Dawai has a heartfelt message for her friends and family in the village: never underestimate your potential and dare to strive for the Fiji Finals.
“To all of us watching from home, especially those in the sub-junior, junior, intermediate, and senior grades, we can all come together and become champions here at the Fiji Finals,” she said confidently, her voice full of hope and determination.
