Ballantine Memorial School (BMS) swimming coach and schoolteacher Seini Nacika said the participation of the school in the 2024 National Schools Swimming Age Group Championships yesterday provided a confident boost in the girls’ performances.
She said the BMS team consisted of first-time swimmers who had just come to know about the skills of swimming.
“We have students from Bua who are first-time swimmers and because of this competition, they have honed their skills and have gotten medals for the school,” Ms Nacika said.
“One of them, Tarusila Tubu, came second on the first day of competition in the 15-17 grade for breast stroke.
“The girls did lack confidence in the beginning because they weren’t used to wearing swimming togs but now they have grown in terms of socialising with swimmers from other schools and getting medals.
“We would like to thank the parents for the support they’ve shown by coming in with energy bars, fruits and energy drinks and also the head of school for allowing us to train in the mornings.
“Swimming is not a popular sport in BMS but hopefully it will be in the future because it boosts confidence in the students.”
