Masirewa scores biggest try

TAVEUNI native and former Western Force outside back Semisi Masirewa scored a lifetime try — marrying his Australian sweetheart Lara Ethne Kruger on Friday, Feburary 16.

While delivering his speech during the reception, an emotional Masirewa shed tears for his late father Paula Lewaya Masirewa.

The 26-year-old Japan-based player said ‘I do’ in front of his close family members from Vuna on Taveuni and friends in Savusavu, Vanua Levu.

Also present at the wedding was his confidante and fellow Japan-based player, Patrick Osborne.

“It has not been all smooth sailing to get to this union today but it has all been possible through the wonderful support of both our family members who are present here today (Friday),” Masirewa said.

“Having a family changes a lot of things and redirects our perspectives, and for me it means juggling my sporting career with my family because it is the most important thing for me now.

“However, this is not the end of my sporting career because I need to support my young family and I have signed up two years with Kintetsu Liners Rugby Club in Japan.

“If given a chance I would be proud to represent the Fiji team and wear the white jumper too but since Japan is offering me a spot I am honoured to take it.”

Masirewa and his new family will spend two weeks in Fiji before starting with his Japan club in April.

“I am happy with my performance last season as it went well and for a couple of years I’ve been busy with the Super Rugby, club games with no break but coming back home is so good especially as it is a memorable one for me,” he said.

“When I head back, it’s straight into training and the games for me.

“Last year, straight after Super Rugby, I went into the top league rugby competition in Japan with the seasons already started so I had no break to come back home, but it was good that the season was in Japan.”
