Following a series of severe maritime incidents last week, the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is urgently directing all mariners, boat operators, and the public to strictly adhere to maritime safety protocols amidst ongoing adverse weather conditions.
MSAF reported on June 15, that the urgency of following maritime safety requirements is clear from two recent incidents in local waters. In one case, a co-ordinated overnight operation by the Republic of Fiji Navy using the RFNS Savenaca vessel, two domestic aircrafts, and the New Zealand Defence Force aircraft rescued five people, including a child, from an overdue boat between Korolevu and Vatulele.
In a separate incident in Beqa waters, three people lost their lives, and joint community and police search efforts continue for one missing person. Two survivors have since been discharged from Navua Hospital.
These harrowing events highlight the catastrophic risks of defying weather warnings. While emergency teams work tirelessly to save lives, rough seas and unpredictable weather pose an immediate and fatal threat, particularly to small craft. Facing adverse sea conditions in inadequate vessels places passengers, operators, and rescue personnel at extreme risk.
Considering weather conditions, MSAF is urgently directing all boat operators, especially those using small fiberglass boats and punts, to strictly implement the following non-negotiable safety protocols;
Check the Weather: Monitor Fiji Meteorological Service updates continuously. If a strong wind or rough seas warning is active, do not go out;
Abide by Capacity Limits: Never overload a vessel. Ensure the weight is evenly distributed;
Lifejackets are Mandatory: Every single passenger, especially children, must wear a correctly fitted, approved lifejacket before stepping onto a boat;
Timely Outboard Engine Maintenance: Adhere to a strict, regular maintenance schedule for all outboard engines, carrying out all necessary checks and servicing in accordance with the manufacturer’s; manual specifications. Following these routine service cycles ensures engine reliability and prevents sudden mechanical failures during voyages;
Communication & Signaling: Always carry fully charged mobile phones in waterproof bags, VHF radios, flares, and mirrors;
Log Your Voyage: Inform family members or shore contacts of your exact route, departure time, and expected arrival time. If plans change, report it immediately; and
Fuel Management: Carry sufficient fuel for the entire trip, including extra fuel for emergencies.
MSAF extends its deepest condolences to the families of those lost in Beqa waters and urges the public to prioritise safety. If in doubt, do not go out.
