THE Fiji Bitter Marist Sevens tournament proudly marks its 50th edition this year, a golden milestone in the history of grassroots rugby development in Fiji.

Since its inception in 1976, the tournament has grown from humble beginnings to become one of the nation’s most iconic rugby sevens events, thanks largely to the steadfast partnership with Fiji Bitter.

Lawrence Tikaram, President of the Marist Rugby Club, reflected on the journey: “From just a handful of teams in the early days to 120 teams competing over three days, the growth has been phenomenal,” Tikaram explained.

“This tournament is now regarded as the toughest sevens competition in Fiji. The long-standing support from Fiji Bitter has been instrumental in sustaining and expanding this legacy.”

Etrina Simpson, Head of Marketing – Alcohol at Coca-Cola Europacific Enterprises, emphasised the significance of this partnership:

“For 50 years, Fiji Bitter has stood alongside grassroots rugby, nurturing talent and community spirit. The Marist Sevens is more than a tournament; it embodies unity and pride across Fiji’s rugby landscape,” she said.

A highlight of the celebrations is the special Legends Match, organised by rugby greats Waisele Serevi and Jerry Tuwai.

Two teams, the Legends Select Team led by Serevi and a team chosen by Tuwai, will face off just before the men’s cup final.

The 15 players from each side will be honoured and rewarded with five cartons of Fiji Bitter and a shared prize of $5,000, commemorating their vital role in building the tournament’s legacy.

This commemorative event not only celebrates five decades of rugby but also inspires the next generation of Fijian rugby talent.
