Mar calls for an international standard bowling surface

BOWLS Fiji needs an international standard surface to train its players to standard out during overseas championships.

Curtis Mar a national selector says one of the areas that they need to seriously work on is the playing surfaces.

“Significant work is required on the greens here to bring it anywhere near the type of greens that we will compete on in New Zealand,” Mar said.

“This all requires finance however none of the clubs have the funds top lift their facilities.

“Therefore we will just have to make do with what we have. But if the funding permits then hopefully the team can travel to the Gold Coast in Australia where our coach Robbie Dobbins is based to practise on the very fast greens there.”

Mar said the national side to the Asia Pacific Championship recently were fortunate to travel to New Zealand one week early to give the players some time to get accustomed to the playing conditions.

“Fiji for the first time had the services of a professional coach. Robbie has coached world champion teams like Australia, Scotland and Malaysia,” he said.

“Whilst his time was very short he imparted significant knowledge which would be hugely beneficial for all our players when playing on very fast greens. Robbie has offered to assist with the preparation of the World Championship next year,” Mar added.
