A man with a disability, convicted of raping his then seven-year-old cousin in her own bed in 2018, has been sentenced to five years, 11 months, and two weeks imprisonment.
The 30-year-old, who is deaf and mute, was found guilty on a count of rape committed in Labasa, where the victim continues to suffer from the emotional and psychological harm caused to her.
Justice Lee James Burney said the man’s lack of maturity played a significant role in his poor decision-making and communication difficulties, which would make his time in prison more challenging.
“I urge you to fully engage with any rehabilitative programs made available to you during your period of imprisonment,” stated Justice Burney on March 13. He must serve three years and 11 months and two weeks of his head sentence before he can be considered for parole.
