A man captured in a video removing eight 500-gram Rewa Butter packs from inside his pants at a supermarket in Suva has been sentenced to eight months in jail.
Abdul Shafil was sentenced by Magistrate Yogesh Prasad at the Suva Magistrate’s Court this morning.
Mr Prasad said a suspended sentenced can not be imposed because of the seriousness of the charge.
Mr Prasad also noted that the court had taken judicial notice of the increase in supermarket thefts.
Mr Shafil was captured in a video last month removing eight 500-gram Rewa Butter packs from inside his pants at a Suva supermarket.
He admitting stealing the butter packs valued at $124.64 on August 7 from the MH Superfresh Supermarket. He was caught by a member of the staff.
The married father-of-one intended to sell the butter to buy essentials for his baby.
