A man died in Malolo, Nadi, on Friday night at a spot where police officers were carrying out traffic operations duties, the Fiji Police Force has confirmed.

The victim, Suresh Prasad, was a passenger in a car that was stopped by police, and he was hit by two vehicles when he tried to cross the road on to the other side where the police vehicle was parked.

Mr Prasad, 61, and some members of his family were returning to Ba after attending a wedding function in Sigatoka.

“He was such a nice person and had no problems with anyone,” said his brother Rajesh Prasad, who was also in the car.

“He lost his wife six months ago and was living with his daughter at Koronubu and has a son working in Suva.”

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the accident happened soon after police stopped the car and signalled for it to be parked on the side of the road.

“Whilst traffic officers were processing the 48-year-old driver, the victim got off the vehicle and while crossing the road to where the police traffic officers were, he was allegedly hit by an unknown vehicle and due to the impact, landed on the opposite lane where he was hit by another vehicle.

“The victim was rushed to the Nadi Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.”

Ms Naisoro said investigations were ongoing.
