A man in his 30s has been arrested by the Western Division Taskforce in connection with a series of sacrilege cases reported in Nadi.

Fiji Police said the arrest comes after investigators recovered several religious statues believed to have been stolen during the incidents.

The Fiji Times sources confirm the man was arrested with a sack that was full of deities near Qeleloa river.

Police say the suspect remains in custody and is currently being questioned as investigations continue.

In a separate incident, five juveniles aged 15 and 17 were interviewed under caution in the presence of their parents after allegedly stoning a temple in Sawani earlier this week.

According to police, the teenagers admitted to throwing stones while walking past the temple at night.

The case file will be submitted to the Divisional Crime Officer, who will consult the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for further legal direction.

Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu has once again dismissed speculation that such incidents are politically motivated.

He said most often, the motive is either for financial gain, internal disputes between members, or youths and juveniles behaving in an unruly manner.
