Meli Malani is determined to work towards a better outcome in the next Swimming Championships after what he considers a disappointing performance in the 100m freestyle early last week.
With a personal best of 23.44 seconds achieved at the recent Pacific Games held in Port Moresby Papua New Guinea, Malani finished with a time of 23.78 at the world event in Kazan Arena, Russia.
“It was disappointing. I didn’t manage to get a personal best. It was slightly off.
“I left the block with a strong start but then towards the end, I didn’t do as well,” he said.
The time however placed him second amongst six other Pacific Island athletes that he competed with at the world event.
With competition at the world stage being very tough, Malani hopes to do better next time.
“I enjoyed my 100m freestyle. It’s tough; there are so many world-class athletes.
“People like us struggle to make it to the semis but hopefully in the next World Championships as long as we keep working hard on our focus, our goals, we might just be there in the next one.”
