Foreign companies are looking to establish cybersecurity operations in Fiji to serve the global market, says Trade Minister Manoa Kamikamica.

“We’re already seeing interest in business process outsourcing, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity,” Mr Kamikamica said, adding Fiji’s time zone made it an ideal destination.

“Fiji is poised for a significant boost in its information and communication sector with the arrival of new fibre optic cables.”

He said Google was investing significantly in undersea cable networks in the Pacific, including Fiji.

“Currently, Fiji only has one subsea cable connection (the Southern Cross cable), which has been a long-standing concern.

“Google has approached us with the intent to run cables from the US to Fiji, from Australia to Fiji, and potentially from Fiji to French Polynesia, Japan, and South America.

“This expanded network will connect every Pacific island nation and will create a major opportunity for the ICT industry in Fiji.”

Mr Kamikamica said those developments would not only create new jobs but also position Fiji as a competitive destination for tech companies, offering a growing range of services to the global market.
