Maharaj happy with weight-lifting target

WEIGHTLIFTING Fiji is optimistic of a powerful performance at the 2019 International Weightlifting Federation Junior World Championship which will be hosted by Fiji in 2019.

Weightlifting Fiji president Atma Maharaj said the future of the sport looked promising.

“Eileen Cikamatana settled for two silver medals and one bronze medal at the Junior Weightlifting Championship and it was her first year as a junior lifter,” he said.

“She would be in the junior category for three years and also in 2019.”

Maharaj earlier said the association would need about $2 million to host the event.

“We have a number of other young athletes which included Sofia Kinikinilau,” Maharaj said.

“If we look at the age of our athletes and look at the performance by kilogram, Sofia is as good as Eileen. If we could get her mobilised into the program which can take her to the next level, then we will have more athletes who would be more competitive come 2019.”
