Maggots found in water

WATER supply has been cut off for 20 households in Caboni, Rakiraki, after maggots were found in the catchment system.

Yesterday, a team from this newspaper visited the area after reports were posted on social media of the insects contaminating the water supply for the sugarcane farming community.

Advisory councillor Rameshwar Chandra said water supply had to be shut down following the discovery of the maggots.

“Some of us had noticed that the water coming from the dam was stinking,” he said.

“So we went to see what was wrong and that’s when we saw the maggots floating around the reservoir.

“We had to dismantle some of the pipes that connected to our reserves and to the houses to stop the water from going to each home.”

Mr Chandra said a dead animal was believed to be in the reservoir which had attracted the flesh eating insects.
