The Southern Division of the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) last Friday hosted a special lunch for 40 inmates who participated in the Yellow Ribbon Walk at the end of last month.

While speaking at the ceremony, FCS acting commissioner Salote Panapasa told the inmates that the Yellow Ribbon program was about what happened outside of the corrections facilities and their participation helped make a statement about the program.

“For the first time in history we have taken out to a public event, inmates from maximum to join others from the medium and minimum,” Ms Panapasa told the inmates.

“I hope, while you were there, you got to witness for yourself what the officers are doing in public to help set up the conditions for your release.

“When you performed last week, the whole world watched, when you performed, you helped us make a statement about the Yellow Ribbon program which has allowed us to bring you out to engage with the public.”

Ms Panapasa also reminded the inmates about the three basic core functions of the FCS — which was to lower the recidivism rate, security of the inmates and public by preventing escapes and the third function was the welfare of inmates.

“The fourth pillar is your rehabilitation which is what we work on with your cooperation inside prison.

“The treatment programs for your offending behaviour and upskilling and rebuilding of self-esteem.”

Ms Panapasa thanked the inmates for their performance at the half-day event and said they would be encouraged to build their skills in the arts.
