As Fiji welcomes the New Year, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) is urging all road users to stay alert, cautious, and responsible, warning that festive celebrations often bring increased traffic and higher risks of crashes.

LTA Chief Executive Officer Mr Irimaia Rokosawa said the New Year should be a time of joy and togetherness, not tragedy.

He issued a stern warning against the dangerous practice of throwing water at moving vehicles, a tradition that has become increasingly common during celebrations.

“Throwing water at moving vehicles can distract drivers, obstruct their vision, and cause them to lose control. What may seem like harmless fun can have devastating consequences for drivers, passengers, and pedestrians,” Mr Rokosawa said.

He reminded motorists to obey speed limits, avoid dangerous overtaking, never drink and drive, and reduce distractions and fatigue while on the road.

“The Authority has observed that speeding and drink-driving are among the primary causes of serious road crashes during the festive season.”

“There is no celebration worth risking your life or the lives of others. Drivers must slow down, remain focused, and ensure they are fit to drive, especially when travelling long distances or driving late at night,” he said.

Mr Rokosawa also highlighted the role passengers play in promoting road safety, urging them to be responsible for their own wellbeing and to encourage safer driving behaviour among drivers.
