The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has once again urged motorists to take greater responsibility on the roads following another tragic accident that claimed the life of a 24-year-old man from Vatukoula yesterday morning.

The fatal crash occurred around 1am along Toko, Tavua. The victim was a passenger in a vehicle driven by an 18-year-old man who allegedly lost control of the car, causing it to veer off the road. Both men sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the Tavua Hospital, where the 24-year-old was pronounced dead on arrival.

LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa extended his condolences to the victim’s family and said the Authority remained deeply concerned about the rising number of lives lost due to reckless and irresponsible driving.

“Speeding remains one of the leading causes of road accidents and fatalities, often resulting in drivers losing steering control and veering off the road — a pattern seen in many of the fatal crashes recorded this year,” Mr Rokosawa said.

He said those who continue to disregard traffic laws would face the full force of the law.

“We cannot afford to gamble with lives. Every time a driver decides to go past the speed limit or get behind the wheel under the influence, they are playing with death — their own or someone else’s.”

Mr Rokosawa added that the LTA, in partnership with Police, continues to conduct joint enforcement operations and road safety awareness campaigns across the country to curb dangerous behaviour and save lives.

“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, and one careless decision can destroy families in an instant.”
