Report bad driving behaviours to authorities so that those behaviours do not jeopardise the lives of other drivers and pedestrians.
Land Transport Authority acting CEO Irimaia Rokosawa made the call as the authority shifts its focus to a collaborative approach with other stakeholders to curb increasing incidents of dangerous driving on our roads this festive season.
Joined enforcement operations between LTA and the Fiji Police Force is targeting bad driving habits, driving under the influence of alcohol, and non-compliance of road safety rules, licensing and registration.
He said the safety of road users was their priority and the present “alarming” trend of dangerous and reckless driving demanded immediate attention.
“The LTA is concerned about the surge in incidents related to dangerous driving, including speeding, aggressive overtaking, and failure to adhere to traffic regulations,” Mr Rokosawa said in a statement.
“These behaviours not only jeopardise the lives of the drivers but also pose a significant threat to pedestrians, other motorists and public safety,” he added.
“We are grateful to the many concerned Fijians who have come forward to report dangerous and careless driving habits across the country. Your vigilance is crucial in helping us curb these dangerous behaviours and save lives on our roads.
“To all Fijians, if you witness any incidents, time, location, and any other relevant information. Additionally, capturing supporting evidence, such as photographs or videos, will assist our enforcement officers in taking swift and appropriate action against reckless drivers.”
So far in 2023, Fiji has recorded 72 fatalities on our roads compared to 38 for the same period last year.
Of those 72, 10 fatalities were attributed to dangerous driving.
