The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has taken firm action against reckless driving, cancelling and suspending the licences of five drivers involved in a recent incident in the Central Division.
LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa confirmed that the drivers were captured on video last month dangerously overtaking other vehicles along Mead Road in Nabua.
He said three licences had been cancelled for one year, while two others were suspended for six months.
“What we witnessed in that video was extremely irresponsible and completely unacceptable,” Mr Rokosawa said.
“The actions of these individuals endangered innocent lives, and as the road safety regulator, we have an obligation to ensure that our roads remain safe for all users.”
He commended the public for reporting the incident, noting that community vigilance was key to promoting safer roads.
“We appreciate the continued support and vigilance of the public. Your cooperation plays a vital role in helping us keep our roads safe and protect lives.”
Mr Rokosawa said the Authority would continue showcause proceedings for drivers who repeatedly breached safety rules. Joint operations with the Fiji Police Force are ongoing to monitor high-risk behaviours through spot checks, vehicle inspections, and speed monitoring.
“Every time someone chooses to drive recklessly, they endanger not only their own life but also the lives of others.”
“Responsible driving saves lives. It is crucial that everyone follows speed limits, avoids distractions, and respects all road users.”
From 1 January to 23 October 2025, the LTA has cancelled 19 licences and suspended 48, while issuing thousands of warnings.
Fiji’s current road death toll stands at 62, compared to 46 during the same period last year.
