THE Lautoka Rugby Union will kick off their season with a franchise competition early next month after postponing the initial start date due to sponsorship delays.
Head coach Peniona Ranitu confirmed the decision, explaining that the delay was necessary as they are still awaiting sponsors’ confirmation for the team jerseys.
“We have postponed our franchise to early next month because we are still looking for sponsors for jerseys,” Ranitu said.
The eight-week competition will serve as a key platform for player selection, with the Lautoka Maroon squad to be finalised at the end of the tournament.
“After the franchise, we will have our club competition,” Ranitu added.
In a major boost for women’s rugby, Lautoka Rugby Union will also include a women’s competition this season.
“We are grateful that the women’s competition will be part of us this season,” Ranitu said.
The union is aiming to field at least four women’s teams, which will allow them to select a women’s squad directly from the competition rather than scouting players individually.
The inclusion of the women’s competition marks an exciting step forward for Lautoka rugby, promoting growth and inclusivity in the sport.
