The assessed threat to aviation security on domestic flights is low, says Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji executive manager aviation security Rigamoto Aisake.
He told the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence CAAF the authority was mandated to conduct security screenings in Nadi and Nausori.
“Recently, there were media reports about Labasa Airport and why there were no security screenings there,” Mr Aisake said.
“Why? Because the assessed threats there are negligible or low.”
Mr Aisake said CAAF worked closely with the Fiji Police Force in determining which areas posed a flight risk to passengers.
“We work with them in terms of intelligence to be able to ensure our scarce resources are not deployed to areas where there is no assessed threat.
“So, aviation security works on the assessed threat and intel. It has to be intel-driven to be able to determine our security measures.
“For example, out in the islands or domestic airports, the assessed threat by both special branch and CAAF in relation to screening is negligible or very low.”
Mr Aisake said CAAF’s scarce resources would only be deployed to areas that pose a threat to aviation security.
