LOVU resident Abdul Feroz was left homeless after his home was destroyed by fire on May 28.

Mr Feroz said he was in Suva when the fire destroyed his home.

“I don’t really know what happened,” said Mr Feroz. “I was shocked when I got a call that my house was on fire.”

Now living with relatives, Mr Feroz said he hoped to get urgent assistance to rebuild his home.

“This is the only home that I have.

“I don’t really know how I will be able to recover from this.”

As investigations continue, the incident ignited concerns of the public not being aware of important emergency contacts such as the National Fire Authority’s 910 number.

NFA CEO Puamau Sowane stressed that timely reporting can make a significant difference during emergencies.

“We continue to stress the importance of the National Fire Authority emergency number – 910,” he said in a statement.

“Every second counts during a fire emergency, and delays in reporting can result in greater damage to properties and increased risk to lives.

“We are urging all members of the public to save 910 on their mobile phones and immediately report any signs of fire or smoke.

“Quick reporting allows firefighters to respond faster and potentially save lives and properties.”

He also highlighted concerns surrounding vacant and unattended homes, reminding property owners to regularly inspect such properties and ensure electrical systems are safe and maintained.

“Vacant houses remain vulnerable to fire risks, especially when left unattended for long periods. Property owners should ensure electrical wiring and appliances are properly maintained and disconnected when not in use.”
