Former head of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Loraini Seru, has been promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) and will now head the Internal Affairs and Professional Standards Unit.
Confirming the appointment, Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu said ACP Seru’s promotion followed the recommendation of a specially established promotion board comprising both internal and external members, ensuring the process was merit based.
“The confirmation was based on the recommendation of a promotion board to ensure appointments are made purely on merit,” Commissioner Tudravu said.
He said ACP Seru is the first woman officer to be confirmed to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police, describing the milestone as a significant achievement for the Fiji Police Force.
“This appointment will no doubt inspire other women officers and young girls who aspire to join the policing profession,” he said.
Commissioner Tudravu added that while policies exist to support the advancement of women in law enforcement, promotions within the Fiji Police Force would continue to be based on merit. He encouraged women officers to seize opportunities when they arise.
ACP Seru, who hails from Tonia Village in Tailevu and has maternal links to Rewasa, Rakiraki in Ra, joined the Fiji Police Force in 1995. She has served in both the Western and Central Divisions before joining CID Headquarters in Toorak.
She was also the first officer seconded to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) from 2006 to 2010, and later completed a two-year tour of duty in Liberia.
ACP Seru is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Academy in the United States and was appointed Deputy Chair of the Pacific Islands Chiefs of Police Women Advisory Network in 2020. She was also named Policewoman of the Year at the 2022 Fiji Police Women Excellence Awards.
She has undertaken further professional training in Australia, Korea and New Zealand, including studies in police management, anti-money laundering and fraud.
ACP Seru said the Fiji Police Force offers many opportunities and encouraged women officers to step into roles traditionally dominated by men.
