Ratu Sukuna Day
- Kubulau District School teachers in Bua organised their own Ratu Sukuna Day celebration for their children. After a lapse of 16 years, the school organised traditional activities and taught iTaukei protocols and practices like weaving and carving.
- More than 50 youths from Tailevu, Rewa and Naitasiri took part in a award leaders program where they learned about basic emergency skills. During their final day of training, the participants had to do practical activities to demonstrate what they have learned in the two-day workshop.
- Iliave Rokodrawe Koroi graduated from the Deckhand Fishing Program where he learned about sustainable fishing practices and how to protect marine life when on board a vessel. The 19-year-old was the youngest in the class.
- The National Trust of Fiji and the Shangri-La Yanuca Island Fiji’s Heritage in your Hands (HIYH) program young recruits with resort staff and stakeholders took part in a huge clean-up at Cuvu Beach in Sigatoka. Cans, plastic bottles, plastic, cartons and wood were collected by the participants.
- Students of Naikavaki College in Bua were reminded to avoid distractions from peer pressure and social media influence during the commissioning of their new classrooms. Commissioning the project was the Education Minister, Aseri Radrodro. He asked the students to remain focus on their studies and not to be sidetracked.
- The World Oceans Day celebration was commemorated in Suva. President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere who spoke to many students present at the celebration said protecting oceans and reefs are a shared responsibility that require collaboration. Oceans regulate the climate, provide sustenance to millions and support countless industries that fuel economic growth.
- Kirwan State High School from Queensland, Australia lost their first match against the FNRL South East Academy but managed a win against the FNRL West Academy side with a 43-4 victory on their final match in Fiji. The school is one of the top premier rugby league academy schools in North Queensland.
- The Shangri-La Yanuca Island Fiji and the National Trust of Fiji Heritage in Your Hands recruits in commemorating World Oceans Day toured the Shangri-La resort’s Marine Education Centre, made fish houses, planted coral and picked-up rubbish by the beach. The students also learned about harmful activities that could destroy Fiji’s marine eco-system.
- The 2023 National Schools Swimming Championships was held in Suva with 27 primary schools and 20 secondary schools registered to compete. A total of 315 students participated in the competition.
- Suva Grammar School won all of its matches in the under-14, U16, U17 and U18 grade in the Vodafone Deans Trophy Southern Zone competition. They had a lot of supporters turn up at the ground to cheer them on.
- Many young Fijians graduated from the Duke of Edinburgh International Award. There were 286 youths who received their certificate, 165 of them were bronze awardees, 61 silver and 59 gold. The program is now provided to over 130 countries and territories around the world since it was founded in 1956 by the late Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip and German educationalist Kurt Hahn.
