TRAVELLING from Narukunibua Village in Namosi every week has become a normal part of Varasiko Roemoni’s rugby league journey.

Yesterday, the Year 10 student joined his USP Raiders under-16 teammates to draw 16-16 with the Nadera Panthers in round three of the Vodafone Cup Junior competition at Bidesi Park in Suva.

“This is my second year with the team. I came all the way this morning just to play and will head back after,” Roemoni said.

He shared that there are three of them from Namosi who play for the Raiders.

Each of them does their own individual training back home and makes the trip to Suva for matches every Saturday.

“It was the coach who saw us and asked us to come and train to play for the team,” he said.

Roemoni first started playing rugby league when he captained the Namosi Secondary School under-17 side at age 15.

Yesterday’s match was the first time for the Raiders’ under-16 team to face the Panthers this season.

Roemoni is hopeful the Raiders can build on their performance and win the under-16 grade this season.

In other results, the Nadera Panthers under-12 defeated USP Raiders 36-0, while the Nabua Broncos beat the Bulldogs 12-0. The Panthers also edged the Raiders 10-0 in the under-14 grade.
