MINISTER for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa is expected to meet the Solicitor-General’s and the Attorney-General’s office staff members next week to discuss and finalise the necessary regulations required for the municipal elections.

Mr Nalumisa said they were taking steps towards holding local government elections this year, nearly two decades after the last election in 2005.

He said it was important to have these regulations, explaining they were crucial for establishing a successful election process.

“They set a foundation on having a very successful local government election,” Mr Nalumisa said.

“We are proposing to have it this year. As for the date, that is something that we still have to confirm.”

He said once the regulations were confirmed, the ministry could proceed with civic education and other preparatory activities for the elections.

Mr Nalumisa reassured the public that Government was committed to ensuring a smooth and well organised electoral process.

“First we have to confirm all the regulations that have to be in place before we can start doing civic dedication and also other preparations towards local government election.”
